I did not see that coming, at all!  What a great way to save them!  And the fact that you started the chapter with Manic was a great way to drag out the cliffhanger.  :D

There are so many things at play in here, I hardly know what to comment on.  I can see that you're gathering up the threads you've laid out so far...  The ending is going to be every kind of epic, I can tell.
